The chalk fence by the playground

Useful capabilities: #black-lives-matter #police-accountability

The fence ran along the playground for a hundred yards, plain, and one afternoon a Black Lives Matter volunteer handed every kid on the block a piece of chalk and let them decide what the fence said. What came up was not a slogan — it was a hundred-yard ledger of the neighborhood's own small truths, in six colors, with a correction where somebody's drawing needed a sun added. The fence has been re-chalked every weekend since. When a spelling, an address, or a wish goes up, it stays until the rain, and the fence has become the block's bulletin board, its art wall, and its promise. The movement discovered what the planners never did: a fence, given away, becomes an argument for who belongs. What fence in your neighborhood is still waiting to be handed back to the people who walk it, and what would they write first?
