The chokehold ban is the cleanest example I can point to: Black Lives Matter said, in a thousand variations, that officers should not be allowed to put a knee on a throat or an arm around a neck, and city after city eventually printed that exact prohibition into law.

The route from chant to statute was not glamorous. It ran through council chambers, committee hearings, and the kind of public comment sessions where the same speakers return monthly. Organizers brought testimony from families no politician wanted in the room. They gathered the policy textables. They took the insults. And a plain, enforceable line — no chokeholds, no lateral neck restraints — went into the manual as if it had always been there.

What I admire is that the movement never treated the law as the finish line. The ban was one clause. Behind it sat the whole apparatus the movement had been building: bodycams, civilian review, data reporting, de-escalation training, the boring machinery that determines whether a good rule bites or just sits in a binder under a title.

There are people who will tell you a chokehold ban is a token, a crumb. It is a crumb in the shape of a law, and laws are how crumbs become meal — the movement understands that the printed line is the thing future organizers will get to build on, and that nobody builds on a slogan that was never rendered into a statute.

What is the other single policy you think Black Lives Matter wrote off the streets and onto the books, and how did that one get done?
["black-lives-matter","police-accountability"]}]}
